Google DINteractive

In 2016, Google’s Design + Innovation team began asking people around the world about their daily information needs (DINs). In 2022 Rare Volume partnered with this team to design a tool that would enable Google employees to harness this data to better envision the future of their products. Here's a look at the thinking and process that went into designing this tool.

Research

Before beginning the design process, the team took a deep dive into the DIN (Daily Information Needs) dataset and familiarized ourselves with existing pain points. We also audited existing tools and conducted surveys to better understand what the new data visualization tool should accomplish.

Exploration

During this phase we imagined many ways the DINteractive tool could come to life. We started by creating sketches and wireframes which we evolved and refined through testing and close collaboration with Google’s Insights and Innovation team.

Where we landed

The interface is stripped down to the most essential controls and information to ensure the tool both is powerful and easy to use.

Opportunity bubbles

The bubbles in the primary visualization represent topics that people search for. The color of a bubble indicates what type of opportunity there might be surrounding this topic and the size shows how big the opportunity is.

Theming

Themes guide Googlers by tying everything back to the opportunities in the primary data visualization.
